What is the "Comenius" programme?

The COMENIUS action's objectives are to improve the quality of education and strengthen its European dimension especially by promoting the transnational cooperation between schools and helping educators develop professionally, and to promote foreign language learning and intercultural awareness among teachers and pupils.
The project in question has a 2-year duration (8/2010-8/2012), involves at least 24 trips and has a budget of 21,000 Euros.

The project's title:

Where have all the bees gone?

The project's objectives:

At the heart of the project lie environmental issues on the ground that all living organisms on the planet are interconnected and interdependent.

  • The aim is to develop effective partnerships with national parks and other organizations in order to analyze and compare the flora and fauna and especially endangered species.
  • It focuses on the environment and the raising of awareness among students regarding their interaction with the environment in their daily lives.
  • It also aims to encourage mobility of teachers and students and ensure that this mobility is organized in such a way as to maximize benefits for each of the two involved parties.
  • Through PP presentations, workshops and regular communication between students, the end goal is to develop a range of skills in foreign languages, communication, research, analysis and presentation.

The participating schools are from:

1. Schwerin, Germany
2. Toul, France
3. Zory, Poland
4. Leon, Spain
5. Sora Frosinone, Italy
6. Vihti, Finland
7. Kalavryta, Greece

What have we done so far?

A "Facebook"-like network has been created which facilitates communication among pupils. Specifically, all participants in the program (teachers and students), and hopefully others who will be interested in it, have created an account through which they have the chance to communicate with each other, discuss issues related with the program, exchange views, upload photos and videos, comment on others' discussions, etc.
The website is http://comeniusbees.ning.com

Timetable for the rest of the program (until 08/2012):

  • Fall 2011: Meeting in Spain
  • Spring 2012: Meetings in France and Finland
  • Summer/Fall 2012: Final coordinators' meeting in Poland.

Of course, the programme's completion entails the dissemination of results to the school community and the local community by means of presentations, a website/blog, publication of brochures, posters etc.
